Description of the offer

Reporting directly to the line manager, the Systems Support Engineer role is to assist the IT and navigation departments including but not limited to mobilization and demobilization of information technology, field navigation and survey departments.

The Systems Support Engineer will also be called on to assist field crews in high demand environments, on regular or irregular rotations where the candidate’s experience will complement that of the on-board crews.

They will be also assisting shore-based IT support team in maintaining/installing/upgrading IT systems and software.

Owing to the diverse nature of the missions the field engineer will be assigned, the candidate is expected to thoroughly document the output of field trips, capturing and promoting best practices and feeding those back into departmental documentation to help continue the continuous improvement loop.

Main Responsibilities:

Must be able to assist operations in variable environments (different seas, different countries, different seasons, different vessels, different equipment, different client’s requirements and different resources). This position must be able to cope with these environments to do the tasks described below.

Vessel Installations & Support

  • Install, configure and operate the IT and integrated navigation systems and peripheral equipment on board our seismic vessels and operations.
  • Be able to install most known operating systems
  • Extended knowledge of computer systems and server hardware, knowledge of networking
  • Ensure maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment
  • When on mission report to navigation / survey head of department on field crews where applicable and assist as necessary
  • Capture department “good practices” within company provided tools and help to distribute these to crews as needed
  • Train field employees in the use of company provided technical resources such as the documentation management system, training systems, document sharing platforms, task tracking systems and inventory/maintenance systems
  • Take an active role in updating department technical documentation
  • Plan and execute various technical projects including vessel mobilization, demobilization, and equipment upgrades

Requirements

  • Degree in Electronics, IT / Navigation / Positioning
  • Extensive knowledge of computer/server hardware, virtualisation, cloud infrastructure, computer storage and peripherals
  • Windows and Linux OS administration
  • Extensive knowledge of computer networking, switches, routers, WiFi setup
  • Hands on experience with diagnosing and resolving technical issues
  • Knowledge of radio communication technology is preferred
  • 5 years in offshore seismic navigation / survey departments / IT support.
