We are Tanooki Labs, a product and development studio based in the United States that works with entrepreneurs on early stage products.

We provide product-minded developers and designers with fun projects to work on, as well as the flexibility and freedom to continue working on their own goals (be it recording an album, crafting your next app, or raising the newest member of your family).

We choose our clients and projects carefully, and every product we build requires us to tackle new and exciting challenges. We also reject the idea that product development has to feel like a grind. We support flexible schedules, are family friendly, and are a fully remote company.

Responsibilities

We are looking for pragmatic designers with:

• empathy for users,
• a deep understanding of the software we build and our clients’ businesses,
• an eye for high-quality designs for mobile apps, web apps, and marketing websites using Figma,
• be able to build and maintain design systems, including components, to ensure consistency across projects,
• ability to participate in short check-in meetings Monday through Thursday,
• Present design concepts clearly and confidently to clients and internal stakeholders.

We respect your time, so here’s what you can expect from the interview process:

• 15 minute introductory conversation with a Tanooki Labs team member
• we pay you $250 for a 2 – 4 hour sample design project.
• 1 hour walk through of your design with the Tanooki team.

Requirements

You should have:

• Proven experience as a Creative Designer, UI/UX Designer, or similar role.
• Expertise in Figma, including design systems and components.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to present and explain design decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams and clients.
• Strong attention to detail and a portfolio showcasing high-quality digital product design.
• good communication skills in English and a location in North America
• Experience working with software development agencies or startups.
• Familiarity with agile project management tools (Linear, Jira, Slack, etc.).
• Understanding of front-end development principles.

• Type: Freelance, part-time (consulting role)
• Hours: Reliable availability for 10–20 hours per week (we’ll pay for a minimum number of hours each week to ensure that you have stable income and can reserve time for us)
