About the role:

We’re looking for a Staff Full-Stack Engineer who’s ready to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Rec. In this role, you’ll be both a hands-on builder and a technical leader—helping scale our platform, guide the team, and influence the direction of the product and tech stack.

You’ll work across the stack—from React and Next.js on the frontend to Node and Postgres on the backend—tackling performance and scalability challenges head-on. You’ll set technical direction, lead by example in the codebase, and be a go-to partner for product and design. You’ll also be a coach and multiplier—someone who helps others grow, improves team output, and brings clarity and structure where things are still taking shape.

We’re still early, so there’s a ton of room to influence what we build and how we build it. If you get excited about mentoring others, building for scale, and leaving your fingerprints on something big, this role is for you.

Who you are:

• You have 10+ years of experience as a full-stack engineer, with a proven track record of technical leadership and delivering complex products at scale.
• You’ve played a key role in early-stage or high-growth environments, helping define both engineering culture and product strategy.
• You lead with clarity, empathy, and pragmatism—balancing technical vision with execution.
• You’re deeply hands-on, but also know when to step back to coach, unblock, or zoom out.
• You have strong architectural instincts and can design systems that scale without overengineering.
• You know how to move fast without breaking things—and can help others do the same.
• You’re energized by ambiguity and thrive in environments where you can create structure, not just inherit it.

What you’ll do:

• Lead architecture across our full-stack platform, with an eye toward scalability, performance, and maintainability as we grow.
• Drive technical vision for core product areas—defining how we build, what we build, and why.
• Mentor and level up other engineers, guiding code quality, design decisions, and technical growth.
• Partner cross-functionally with product, design, and leadership to align priorities and deliver high-impact work.
• Own complex, high-leverage projects from end to end—across frontend (React/Next.js), backend (Node/Express), and database layers (Postgres).
• Identify technical debt and set strategies to pay it down while still moving quickly.
• Bring strong engineering intuition to a fast-paced, feedback-driven environment.

• Frontend: React + Next.js, TailwindCSS, Storybook
• Backend: Node + Koa (Express), Postgres + Objection.js
• Infrastructure & Ops: Inngest, Segment, Customer.io

Pay & Benefits:

For this role, you’ll receive a competitive compensation package—a base salary between $160,000–$240,000—along with a meaningful equity grant. The final compensation will depend on the location and level at which the candidate is hired, as we are considering candidates for multiple levels for this role.

Location:

This role can be fully remote or hybrid. While most of the Rec team is based in the Bay Area, with access to our downtown San Francisco office, there’s no requirement to be in the office daily. We’re all about flexibility and empowering you to do your best work—whether that’s from home, in the office, or a mix of both.
