Freelance UX Designer for Social Impact Design Agency (Remote – USA Only)

Freelance UX Designer for Social Impact Design Agency (Remote – USA Only)

Constructive is a leading social impact strategy and design firm that helps advance social, environmental, and economic justice. We’re a close-knit, committed, and values-driven team of experts and advocates who partner with ambitious organizations to make the world a more fair, equitable, and sustainable place. If you’d like to get a feel for our culture, read our company values here.

We are looking for a freelance UX Designer to join our team on a part-time contract basis who will assist with developing IA, sitemaps, wireframes, content outlines, and annotation for website design projects. This role is a great fit for a seasoned UX Designer with a passion for social impact who has great brand and digital storytelling skills and a strong understanding of how nonprofit brands can effectively engage audiences, particularly through websites that emphasize story and knowledge mobilization.

Please note: UX Designers applying for this role should demonstrate a keen understanding of brand storytelling through digital channels. This is not a role for designers focused on apps or products.

Your strategic UX designs will be the foundation on which we design and build brand experiences that drive social impact—primarily through websites that effectively position nonprofit brands to deepen audience engagement, deliver valuable content, and drive measurable outcomes.

About You

You will drive the organization and design of information-rich websites for our social impact clients that are the foundation of the brand experiences they create. You are great at understanding how to effectively position and strengthen a brand through digital experiences. Your designs live at the intersection of brand and audience needs/goals. And you’re driven by the outcomes and impacts that our clients are seeking to have through our work together. You’re confident with auditing and organizing information and ensure that it tells the right story and engages audiences in the right actions. You enjoy translating strategy into UX designs that deliver on client goals, outcomes, and KPIs. You’re a collaborative partner who understands strategy, content, and engineering to ensure that there is a strong, connective through-line between strategy and execution.

Work You’ll Contribute To

  • Website Audits: Perform website assessments including heuristic reviews, content, UX, and feature audits; conduct desk research, competitor audits, and other research as needed.
  • Content Organization: Assist in ensuring content is organized, categorized, and tagged appropriately, develop user journeys, and assist in developing plans for content migration.
  • Sitemap Development: Develop sitemap options and high-level content outlines that communicate the purpose, content, and actions of key pages.
  • Wireframe Development: Design and annotate wireframes, develop prototypes, and ensure strategy is present throughout the experience.

Skills & Experience You’ll Need

  • Proficiency working in Figma.
  • A deep desire to work in the social impact space to help solve complex societal issues.
  • A collaborative mindset and a strong understanding of how the intersection of content, design, and technology builds brand experiences in large-scale websites.
  • A passion for people, brands, designed experiences, storytelling, and content engagement.
  • The ability to persuade by articulating clear and compelling ideas.
  • Excellent presentation skills and the ability to keep attendees engaged and feeling confident in your recommendations.
  • The ability to turn strategy into websites and digital experiences.
  • A work style that is organized and methodical in its approach to designing digital experiences.
  • A portfolio that showcases your approach to and results in developing audits, content organization, sitemaps, and wireframes for information-rich websites.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a UX Designer with emphasis in digital/website engagement.
  • Flexibility to work within Constructive’s established processes.

Nice-to-Haves That Will Make You Stand Out to Us

  • A love of branding.
  • Experience with Content Strategy and Content Design.
  • Ability to conduct usability studies and UX research.
  • Knowledge of WordPress and web development processes.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with SEO.
  • Experience with digital marketing and martech platforms.
  • Experience with CRM strategy and platforms.
  • Experience with social media strategy.

Our Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion

We believe strongly that diversity is one of our greatest strengths—that the more perspectives we bring to the mix, the better we are as people and the better partner we are for our clients. So, in considering if Constructive is a good fit for you, know that all we care about is that you’re qualified to do the job, share most or all of our values, and want to be here. These are the things we’ll be evaluating for every applicant—and if you meet those and add to our diversity, all the better.

Interested? Great!

We understand that candidates are not going to meet all of our desired criteria—however we encourage you to apply anyway if you meet some of them. We’re looking to develop relationships with multiple freelance UX designers and will focus on your strengths while giving you exposure to areas you’d like you grow in.

Note: Only those with portfolios will be considered

Senior UX Strategist

Senior UX Strategist

We’re seeking an experienced UX Strategist who approaches every challenge with empathy, logic, and a deep understanding of what makes people tick, what helps organizations best achieve their goals.

Why work at Yoko Co?
  • Do good, better: We exclusively serve clients who make a positive impact on the world. This is your chance to build things that help create a better place for all of us.
  • 4-day work week and lots of holidays. Mondays are flex days, meaning you’re free to take them off if you’re caught up on your work. Plus, we’re closed for nearly a full week at Thanksgiving (November), and two weeks at the end of the year, plus a bunch of other days, too. Work-life balance FTW!
  • High performance, no jerks. You’ll collaborate with good people who believe in doing great work.
  • Best Place to Work (and that’s not just our opinion). We’ve been named a Best Place to Work by the Inc. 5000 and Washington Business Journal.
We value team members who are motivated by our mission and driven to make a positive impact. If you have a passion for excellence, a growth mindset, and a commitment to collaboration, we’d love to hear from you.

If you work here, you’ll:
  • Lead the room. You’ll be responsible for crafting and presenting a plan of attack — and the WHY behind it — for your clients and your project team.
  • Do research, conduct interviews, and formulate web strategies to help our clients increase their impact and achieve their missions.
  • Be more than just a “person with a plan.” You’ll also help execute, get your hands dirty, and do what needs to be done.
  • Be involved at critical points throughout the full process, from wireframes to design concepts, from the first kickoff meeting, to the final QA, to make sure everything fits together and help guide the project team to a successful result.
  • Collaborate closely with designers, developers, and project managers, to ensure everyone is on the same page and working towards a common goal.
  • Guide organizations along a path of digital transformation, helping them refine their web presence, and increase their impact.
  • Provide mentorship and feedback to other members of the UX/strategy team, to help them grow (and they’ll do the same for you).

You’ll do well in this job if you:
  • Have a firm grasp of digital strategy, web design and development, content marketing, search engine optimization, content management software, and the platforms that can help make it happen (things like WordPress, Hubspot, Google Analytics, etc.)
  • Have experience leading a team and a client through the strategic aspects of website redesign and marketing projects. (You should have at least 25 projects under your belt.)
  • Have experience creating UX deliverables as a part of a web design strategy. This includes things like Personas, User Flows, Information Architectures, and Sitemaps at a high level of execution and complexity.
  • Understand the principles of UX design and marketing that get results, including the buyer’s journey, conversion orientation, calls to action, marketing automation, and more.
  • Have experience working on large websites, with complex data structures.
  • Can communicate comfortably, clearly, and empathetically with executives, marketers, and stakeholders.
  • Are flexible, and understand that sometimes you’ll have to wear an unexpected hat or two when the situation calls for it.
  • Can walk the line between the “what to do” and “how to do it” path of building a website with the ability to understand the underlying technology that makes the website experience happen – and then explain it to clients.
  • Bonus: Experience working with professional/membership associations.

However, maybe don’t apply if:
  • You prefer to work on a single big project at a time. We all have to do a bit of juggling around here, and while we wish we could pour ourselves into just one thing for weeks at a time to make it perfect, that’s often not the reality.
  • You’ve ever said “that’s not my job” or “that’s below my pay grade.” While we try to utilize everyone in the best way we possibly can, sometimes things can get dicey and we have to pitch in to help reach the finish line.

What you get:
You’ll get a flexible schedule, unlimited time off, a competitive salary, a profit share bonus (starting in your second year), the ability to work wherever you want, a personal development budget, and all US federal holidays and multiple weeks off at the end of the year to recharge. We’ll also offset your entire carbon footprint. If you’re in the US, we also offer health insurance, disability and life insurance, and 401(k) matching.

More about us:
We’re a group of people who are passionate about the work we do, the clients we serve, and improving our craft. We also care about each other — we don’t think of one another as coworkers or employees, but as fellow humans. From developers to designers, project managers to strategists, we bring out the best in each other.

We’ve been in business for over a decade, our whole team is remote, we’ve been named a Best Place to Work by the Inc. 5000 and the Washington Business Journal.

To apply:
If you’re interested, fill out our application form. (An actual human from our team looks at every submission. P.S. – We encourage you to include a video message!)

This position is only open to people located in the US and Canada.
