Web Designer – Experienced freelance web designer/developer
Job Overview & Description
AFM is built on the belief that good communications — clear, accurate, strategic communications — helps people. Especially in health care and policy spaces, clarity is a service.
We partner with organizations, policy experts, nonprofits and health care leaders who are trying to make things better. We work with people and organizations who want to help others and who are doing that well.
And we approach this work with curiosity, professional rigor and a lot of heart.
The Position (Contract Role):
We are looking for an experienced freelance web designer/developer to partner with us on client projects as needs arise. Our ideal contractor combines strong design instincts with the technical skills to build, improve and troubleshoot websites independently.
We’re particularly interested in someone who understands that a website is a communications tool. You should be able to understand the goal behind a project, recommend a practical solution and execute it without assuming every challenge requires a complete website redesign.
This is a project-based contractor role with no guaranteed minimum number of hours.
Responsibilities:
- Design and develop landing pages, campaign pages, microsites and other digital content
- Build, update and troubleshoot WordPress websites
- Improve website navigation, information architecture and user experience
- Create or redesign newsrooms, resource centers, blogs and other content-heavy website sections
- Implement website recommendations related to communications, content and SEO
- Address broken links, redirects and other technical website issues
- Improve page layouts and mobile responsiveness
- Build and improve forms and integrations
- Support website migrations and redesigns
- Apply accessibility and usability best practices
- Support analytics, tracking and basic technical SEO
- Assist with website maintenance, plugin management, backups and related technical needs
- Collaborate with AFM and other communications, content, SEO and design partners as appropriate
- Recommend efficient, practical solutions based on each client’s needs and budget
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Demonstrated professional web design and development experience
- Strong WordPress experience
- Portfolio demonstrating both design and development capabilities
- Working knowledge of HTML and CSS and ability to troubleshoot common website issues
- Understanding of responsive design, accessibility and UX best practices
- Familiarity with technical and on-page SEO
- Experience with website analytics and tracking
- Ability to accurately scope projects and communicate anticipated costs and timelines
- Strong communication and project management skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and deadlines
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with health care organizations, nonprofits, associations, public affairs organizations or professional services firms
- Experience with content-heavy websites
- Familiarity with email marketing, CRM and other common website integrations
Compensation:
- Project-based independent contractor work; volume will vary based on client needs
- Compensation $75-$100 per hour, based on agreed-upon hourly rates or project fees
- Remote work
