Web Developer

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (“NHMLAC”) was the first museum in L.A. to open its doors 109 years ago and is poised for an exciting new era as it plans for the future. Having recently completed a new strategic framework, the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County—including NHM at Exposition Park, La Brea Tar Pits and Museum in mid-Wilshire, and the William S. Hart Museum in Newhall—is looking forward to new building projects and campaigns, exhibitions, community outreach, and innovative audience engagement.

The NHMLAC is seeking a Web Developer for our Digital Strategies department. The Web Developer works closely with the Digital Product Manager to support strategic content development, digital technology implementation, and revenue generation by helping to estimate, plan, and execute major software initiatives across the museum. Lead digital development practices and programming standards by partnering with technology teams across NHMLAC to enhance the experience of our visitors both online and onsite at the Natural History Museum. It is an exciting time as we embark on new journeys of becoming a museum of, for, and with L.A.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Manages, plans, and maintains web/digital products including a variety of React/Next.js web applications, including but not limited to museum collection portals, and custom ticketing pages, and digital interactive experiences.
  • Uses the latest tools and standards in React/Next.js, Node.JS, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, and is knowledgeable of popular programming languages such as Unity, PHP, Python.
  • Works with a team of developers and a product manager to make architectural decisions about the direction of NHMLAC’s web-based properties.
  • Conduct trial runs of programs and software applications to be sure they will produce the desired information and that the instructions are correct.
  • Collaborates with Junior Web Developer to identify and prioritize bugs, maintenance tasks, and enhancements of the NHMLAC Pantheon hosted Drupal 9 websites (including, but not limited to nhmlac.org, nhm.org, tarpits.org, and hart.org) to assign to maintenance vendor

This position has the following requirements:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of software development experience with an emphasis on web/mobile platforms (not including time spent in school)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or similar degree
  • The ideal stack is:
    1. JavaScript/TypeScript (React, Next.js, Vanilla JavaScript, Node.js, JQuery)
    2. CSS (Gulp/Sass/Less, Tailwind)
    3. Databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Firebase)
    4. Backend programming languages/frameworks (Node.js/Express.js)
    5. SSH, FTP, and Telnet protocols
    6. Python/Flask/Django, PHP 6+
    7. Drupal 8+ module development and maintenance
    8. Agile/Scrum methodologies
    9. Slack, Asana and/or other work management and communication tools
  • Experience with following technologies are a plus:
    1. Mobile Web Application Development
    2. React Native
    3. WebGL/Unity/Unreal or other web-based 3D rendering
    4. Google Marketing Platform/SEO (GTM, Google Analytics)
    5. Adobe Creative Suite (Adobe XD, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Demonstrated ability to write efficient, clean, readable, portable, and reliable code.
  • Ability to design and implement flexible software to meet requirements
  • Demonstrable ability to find and squash bugs
  • 75% hands-on development work—we are seeking technologists who deliver thoughtful solutions and can adapt quickly to shifting requests/deliverables
  • Demonstrated ability to be innovative, flexible, and self-directed; show a willingness to share, discuss, and brainstorm ideas; enjoy solving problems and working/communicating with other developers.
  • Ability to work independently as well as coordinate tasks and requirements with other developers and managers
  • Strong visitor/user-centered design approach and understanding of the agile methodology

The NHMLAC is especially interested in candidates whose background and experience have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to engagement and inclusion with culturally diverse audiences in museum and in sciences.

The NHMLAC is seeking applicants who have demonstrated experience and commitment to working with a diverse community. Salary range for this position is $86,245 – $90,000 with experience plus excellent benefits. This is a full-time regular, exempt position.
